Since the light waves generated by Induction lighting are all in visible range the light generated by the induction lamp is very powerful. Dear Mr. S.Murugesan, sorry but i can't draw the PF triagle here. it is actually called as "Power Trianle" and not pf triangle. the base is the active power i.e. "kW", perpendicular is reactive power i.e. "kVAr" and the hypotenuse is apparent power i.e. "kVA". kVA = sqrt ( kW2 + kVAr 2) power plant supplies only kVA. idealy kVA should be equal to kW. but due to inductive loads (induction motors, lamps, induction furance etc) reactive component gets added and kVA differ from kW. the percentage by which kVA differ from kW is called as power factor. higher inductive load means higher kVAr means lower pf. therefore we have to provide reactive power compensation by pf correction capacitors. capacitors provide reactive power towards the supply point and therefore hight of kVAr in triangle reduces and kVA becomes more closure to kW. it means power factor has improved.   2010-07-16 09:07:56

in commercial buildings 45% to 50% energy consumption is due to Air Conditioning. Then the second major consumer is lighting and computers. these 3 areas should be focused. Air Conditioning is most important. in commercial buildings people depends on product based energy conservation (like lower loss ACs, energy efficient lighting, lighting saving panel etc). but it is always good to go through a proper energy audit and then get the projects implement thorugh ESCO route.   2010-07-16 08:07:26

Which is reproduced below Why do biomass combustion qualify for CDM benefits even though they emit carbon dioxide? Because it absorbs the same amount of carbon in growing as it releases when consumed as fuel. I feel that the answer is wrong. Dear Mr. Wani, that answer is right. When the plant grows during that process they absorb the carbon dioxide available in atmospere. the growth of the stock of any plant depends on the amount of CO2 absorbed by it. scientifically this process is also called as CO2 sequestation. when these plants are burnt it emit the same CO2 which it has absorbed during growth. thus the same amount of CO2 earlier absorbed is now realesed to the atmosphere. there is no emission of additonal CO2.therefore these kind of projects qualifies for CDM. whereas the fosil fuels are also born from CO2. but is a very long process and have took 1000s years for it. therefore when fosil fuels are burnt they emit additonal CO2 than the existing CO2 level in atmosphere.   2010-06-04 05:06:44

Induction Motor- Relation between load and power factor. Dear Mr. Manoj I want to know if there is any relation beween the load on the induction motor power factor? If yes what itis ? While auditing shall I measure PF at no load and full load ? Effect of supply frequency on the power drawn by the Induction motor . In Gujarat since there is not much power shortage so in the day time the frquecy is around 49 to 50. But in the night when there is not much load on the grid the frequency goes upto 52 hrtz. Dear Wani Sir, Yes, there is relation between the motor pf and motor loading. as the loading of motor increases pf also increases. you can find out the graph between motor pf and loading in BEE guide book. while auditing you need not to measure the no load pf, as we have to comment only of operating conditions. yes, increase in the supply frequency of motor will affect the power consumptions. as the supply frequency increases, synchronous speed of the motor will increase. Ns = 120 x f / p this will result into increase in motor operating speed and thereby input current. but this increase in power consumption will be very less. supply frequency doesn't varry more than +-5%. i.e. 52.5 to 47.5 Hz. if it is then we should complain to the distribution company. the change in frequency should be considered if we are considering a centrifugal pump. also it will affect the power consumption significantly only when it is remaining away than 50 Hz for a longer period. if such case is found then record the data for atleast 24 hrs.   2010-03-09 18:03:16

Question-1 If there is any earth leakage or earthfault and emnergy is getting wasted from live points to earth how to detect it? If it is heavy energy loss though it is easily noticed but if it is a minor then it is very difficult. Question-2 Effect of voltage on the ppower consumption and lux ( output light ) on CFL anf T-% tubes . If the voltage supply to T-5 tube or CFL is reduced say from 230 to 210 volts what will be the effeft on warttage ( power consumption )and lux level ? Will the capacitor bank get affected if Harmonic level is high in the system ? Q-2 A Manufacturer has come out with a Energy saver Device. I had written to them and they say that it works on the Priciple of power factor. I really do not understand how the energy will be saved if the device is put near the meter in a single phase supply.At present in India there is no penalty for low power factor for single phase/lightening power coneection. Capacitor bank we not get affected by it. form the description of the energy saving equipment what you have written I understand, that these equipments improves the power factor. Dear Sir, (1) The power factor can not be more than 1. It only either goes on the lagging side or leading side. When we install capacitor bank it always improves the PF towards supply side and not towards the load side. Thus if we install capacitors on a motor terminal it will not improve the PF of the motor but it will improve the PF towards MCC panel. However if the PF goes very much on the leading side the voltage will go up. which may affect the load operation. But it will not that much significant. If the load is very much sensitive like electronic equipments, you can use to filters to avoid harmonincs. (2) Fix capacitors should be install for average load. And to take care of the variable load extra capcitors should be installed with APFC panel. APFC panel will operate them to meet the set PF. (3) As per International standards IEEE 519, which provides the guidelines on control systems, safety measures for electrical equipments etc. permits the Vthd upto 3 % and Ithd upto 15 % as reasonable limit.   2009-12-04 20:12:51
